History

Responsible Information Management (RIM) is an ethics-based framework and long-term strategy for the management of all personal and sensitive business information. Organizations that adopt RIM are better able to align the information preferences of their consumers, employees, shareholders and the general public with business, data, and technology management practices within the organization. Further, it helps ensure that an organization’s leaders, employees and business partners protect and respect personal information.

The RIM Council is a consortium of corporations and experts (public and private) brought together by the Ponemon Institute to facilitate problem solving and provide links to the best available information in the privacy and data protection disciplines.

Under the direction of Dr. Larry Ponemon, members of the RIM Council are engaged in projects that will assist member organizations achieve their privacy and data protection goals. Organizations invited to join the RIM Council represent a diverse cross-section of industry sectors.

The first sponsor corporations joined the RIM Council in 2003 and membership has since grown to more than 40 corporations. Many are Fortune 500 companies. In early 2005, an Advisory Board was created composed of an elected group of leaders from sponsoring companies. The first formal meeting of the Advisory Board was held in June, 2005.
